Blood bank refrigerators and deep freezers store different blood components at very different temperatures — here's how to tell them apart.

Different Jobs, Different Temperatures

It is easy to assume "cold storage" is one category, but a blood bank refrigerator and a deep freezer serve different components with very different temperature requirements.

Blood Bank Refrigerator

Maintains a strict 2°C to 6°C range, used for storing whole blood and packed red blood cells (RBCs). Features typically include forced air circulation for uniform cooling, a 7-day circular chart recorder, and audio-visual alarms for temperature deviations.

Deep Freezer

Operates at -40°C or -80°C, used for fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate, which need to be frozen rapidly and stored long-term. Typically uses a dual cascade refrigeration system and high-density insulation.

Why the Distinction Matters

Storing plasma in a standard refrigerator, or whole blood in a deep freezer, would damage the component and make it unsafe or useless for transfusion. Each piece of equipment exists because the component it stores has a specific survival temperature.

Choosing Between Them

This is not really an either-or choice — a functioning blood bank needs both, sized to the components it processes. The real planning question is capacity: how much whole blood vs plasma volume you expect to store at once.
